After being struck by the realization I didn't need ripe tomatoes to use in my breeding program I took a look at some larger beefsteaks to try as pollen donors next year. Of course I still cringe when I look at the 90+ days to maturity plants but I did buy seed from Heritage Seeds for a couple of beefsteaks I want to try that have days to maturity in the 80 to 90 area...
Blaue Kasachstan is a potato leaf plant, vigorous growth, early fruit set, large brown fruit with good flavor (love dark tomatoes and this one sounded right up my alley)
Fred Limbaugh’s Potato Top- another potato leaf plant this one seems to have a very good reputation for flavor and has large pink beefsteak tomatoes.
I also picked up Mr. Stripey but may or may not use it for breeding... Of course it is a regular leaf plant and it sounds more like a bi-color then striped like my little Tigerella.
On this years front I seem to have two tomatoes forming from my attempt at crossing Micro Tom x Large Barred Boar. Yellow Canary is just starting to flower so I will be able to attempt some crosses with iit and Tigerella soon. Bonsai is also almost ready to flower and I keep eyeing my Green Zebra plants... but on the other hand I do want to try Blush in a cross...
AND honestly I need to limit my crosses this year so I have room to grow out possible F1 plants next year as well as the new varieties mentioned above
That one sounds awesome! Haven't heard of it before. Sounds right up my alley too and a super candidate for a cross! Good luck!
